DRIVER QUALIFICATION MAXIMUM RENTAL LENGTH
Irish tax laws restrict rental days to a maximum of 34 days.
DRIVING LICENCE Renters and extra drivers must produce their own driving licenses issued in their country or place of residence, held for a minimum of 5 years, with a minimum of five years accident free driving prior to rental. Renters with United Kingdom or other two part licenses must have all parts of their current license at time of rental. DRIVING EXPERIENCE
No surcharge for drivers of any age. County does not discriminate on the basis of age. We discriminate on a renter’s ability to drive at any age. Renters under 25 and over 70 will be accepted if they have a current driving license issued in a country where driving is on the left side.
Renters under 25 and over 70 must produce a note from their insurance company showing that they have been driving accident free for the past five years. EXTRA DRIVERS
When a rental is 7 days or more a second driver may be added. Rentals under 7 days in length may have a second driver only where both drivers have licenses issued in a country where driving is on the left hand side of the road. Additional charge of €7.00 per day applies for the entire rental period.
DRIVING ABILITY ASSESSMENT Drivers may be subject to a pre-rental driving ability assessment.
DRIVING CONVICTIONS
Renters who have been convicted of a major driving offence in the past five years will not be accepted.
DRIVER SECURITY REQUIREMENTS

Van rental Insurance can be supplied at €50.00 per day plus VAT. This Insurance is only available to renters who are over 30, driving 10 years on a full license and have Irish Car Insurance for over 5 years. The van may only be driven in the republic of Ireland and is subject to a maximum of 150 kilometres per day. No insurance will apply outside these conditions. The insurance is subject to an excess of €2,000.00 irrespective of how the damage is caused. This excess must be prepaid at commencement of rental and will be refunded if no damage at termination. Refunds will only be processed 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday excluding Irish public holidays. Cargo van must be returned during depot opening hours.
SECURITY COMMITMENT - CREDIT CARD
Renter is required to leave a security commitment at commencement of rental. A credit card belonging to the renter is mandatory to process a security committment. Debit cards, personal cheques or payment methods other than credit cards are not acceptable as a security commitment.
ANOTHER PERSON’S CREDIT CARD
With prior approval, a credit card, belonging to another person, who must be present at the time of rental with photo ID (passport) and address verification (recent utility bill) can be accepted. Credit card will be imprinted on the rental contract and entered into data records. The credit card holder must sign the rental contract and agree to all terms.
CREDIT CARD PRE AUTHORIZATION A pre-authorization of a minimum of €350.00 and up to insurance/waiver excess will be processed at commencement of rental. Card holder must agree to the terms and conditions and sign the rental contract. A pre-authorisation will be held on the credit card and this pre-authorization will not be processed if there are no additional charges or driving violations (rental extensions, damage, parking, speeding tickets, tolls or any other charges due under the terms of the rental contract).
RELEASE OF CREDIT CARD / PRE-AUTHORISATION RELEASE
Pre-authorisation will be released by the credit card holder’s own bank. County Car Rentals will not be responsible for expediting the release of any un-processed pre-authorisations.
FUEL POLICY
All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel. Do not refill at termination. There is no 'return full' option. This first tank of fuel is prepaid at a discounted rate with no refund for unused fuel. Where it may not be possible to use a full tank of fuel do not refill before return. County will refill and charge at a premium pump price.
SAFE USEAGE POLICY
In the interest of safety on Irish roads and to help prevent injury to our renters and other Irish road users, we encourage drivers to respect our speed limits and recommended safe daily distances for driving on our unique Irish roads. Risk management has identified that there is a greatly increased chance of accidents and serious injury when vehicles are driven in excess of the following averages:
1 to 4 day rentals - 280 kilometres average per day (280 to 1120 kilometres)
5 to 7 day rentals - 250 kilometres average per day (1250 to 1750 kilometres)
8 days plus rentals - 220 kilometres average per day (1760 to 2900 kilometres)
Driving within these distances will allow more than enough time to safely visit and enjoy our beautiful countryside. To encourage safe driving, we reserve the right to impose a penalty of €90 minimum for vehicles driven in excess of these recommended safe distances.
BOOKING FROM COUNTYCAR RENTALS FLEET SELECTING A COUNTY VEHICLE
Seating
All County’s cars have seats for five people. The smaller cars will not be comfortable for more than two people; we have listed the groups with suggested comfortable seating. If you wish to carry more than five people then you should consider a Group L People Carrier. People carriers will take up to five adults and two children for a total of seven. Be careful in choosing this group with a seven seat configuration, as rear leg space will be restricted and luggage space will fit only one small case. This group can have the two rear seats folded down and will take five people in great comfort with five cases. For maximum seating, a Group K Minibus will accommodate eight adults with eight cases. Minibuses are great for golfers.
Luggage
When touring you will have luggage with you. It is essential to book a vehicle that will accommodate your luggage in the boot (case size refers to average size cases). Ireland is no different from any other country, if luggage is visible; it is most likely to be stolen from an unattended vehicle. Have your luggage in the boot before starting your journey, do not wait to place it in the boot when you stop, even at remote viewing areas.
Vehicle Size
Larger vehicles are more comfortable. Most vehicles have high performance four cylinder engines, which give good performance and good fuel consumption. Distances in Ireland are not great. Most scenic roads are narrow and winding and smaller cars have an advantage.
Fuel Use
Although fuel is sold in litres in Ireland, fuel consumption figures are still calculated in miles per gallon M.P.G (it’s an Irish thing!) Fuel consumption figures are for average driving and may vary with different drivers.
Doors
All doors are counted. Three and five doors include the rear hatch back door. Vehicle model types are typical for each group.
Vehicle Group Guarantee
A specific car make or model is never guaranteed, only a vehicle within a particular group. In the rare event of the depot not having a vehicle within your pre-booked group, you will be offered a car from the next higher County group at no extra cost. County may change typical vehicles in a group as new models and model upgrades occur.
Voluntary Upgrade
If on arriving at the County depot you decide to upgrade to a higher group to that which you have pre-booked and pre-paid, you must pay an extra charge for this 'voluntary upgrade'. The extra cost is calculated from the difference between the prevailing local rate of the two groups and is payable directly to County.
BOOKING A COUNTY CAR
It is always advisable to pre-book a County car prior to arrival into Ireland. Excellent advance booking rates are available. County Car Rentals has a network of agents worldwide who are familiar with our product and service. They can pre-book a vehicle and arrange for pre-payment of some or most of the charges at best value.
INSURANCE WAIVERS AND PROTECTIONS INSURANCES, WAIVERS, PROTECTIONS ISSUED BY OTHERS County Car Rentals only recognises insurances, waivers and protections supplied by County Car Rentals or by an Irish based insurance company.
Without insurances, waivers or protections supplied by County Car Rentals or supplied by Irish based insurance companies, the renter is totally responsible for, and must pay County Car Rentals directly for, any and all damage to the rental car irrespective of how it is caused and irrespective of who is at fault.
Insurances, waivers and protections issued by companies outside of Ireland do not apply to the rental vehicle, there is no direct cover arranged with County Car Rentals, whatever arrangement exists is between the renter and the issuing company.
RENTER’S RIGHT TO DECLINE INSURANCES, WAIVERS AND PROTECTIONS
County Car Rentals permits renters to decline insurances, waivers and protections offered by County Car Rentals.
RENTER’S RESPONSIBILITIES IF DECLINING INSURANCES, WAIVERS AND PROTECTIONS
If renter declines insurances, waivers and protections offered by County Car Rentals and renter does not transfer cover by an Irish based insurance company, then renter personally assumes total financial responsibility for damage to or loss of the rental vehicle and will be charged by County Car Rentals for all damage to or loss of the rental vehicle.
RENTER’S BOND REQUIREMENTS
If renter declines insurances, waivers and protections offered by County Car Rentals, then, at commencement of rental, renter will be required to leave a bond of €15,000 or the value of the vehicle whichever is greater and this must be deposited with County Car Rentals. This will be held as guarantee for renter’s commitment to pay for damage to or loss of the rental vehicle. This bond must be in the form of Euro cash or bank guarantee. Credit cards, personal cheques or other forms of payment for bond are not acceptable. Refunds of bond will only be made if vehicle is returned undamaged. Refund will be made only at County Car Rentals head office Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
USE OF VEHICLE FOR HIRE OR REWARD

If renter loses the rented vehicle's key, renter will be obliged to pay for its replacement (approximately €300.00) plus any associated transport costs in connecting renter with a new key or car. Because of security implications, spare keys can not be obtained from vehicle dealers outside opening times. Renter will be responsible for safe storage or rental vehicle and for rental charges when waiting for spare key.

DRIVING A COUNTY CAR IN IRELAND Driving is on the left
Ireland is well served with a network of motorways and well-paved secondary roads. Ireland is approximately 550 kilometres north to south and 300 kilometres east to west. Driving distances in Ireland are not great. Allow plenty of time for your journeys, scenic roads are winding and there is a lot to stop and see along the way. Traffic in large towns can be congested as main roads generally go through them so allow plenty of time especially if returning to Dublin Airport.
Road Signs and Fuel
Road signs in Ireland will be familiar, as Ireland like most countries, use similar signs. Petrol stations are numerous with most opening 7am to 11pm and many have 24-hour operations. Most petrol stations have convenience stores which stock snack food and drink items.
Safe Driving
At commencement of rental, County provides each renter with a process to greatly reduce their risk of road accident. In the past seven years since County introduced this process, County’s accident rate has reduced to the lowest ever level ever recorded by the major car rental insurer. This process is particularly suited to those who are not used to driving on the left and is presented in a universal language code.
HELP ON THE ROAD Mechanical Assistance
In the event of a breakdown, all County vehicles are covered by either the manufacturers warranty or 24 hour Automobile Association roadside assistance. No repair work may be carried out without the prior approval of County Car Rentals who will issue a repair purchase order. Please ensure you keep photocopies of receipts.
ACCIDENTS
The Irish Police (Gardai) and County Car Rentals must be notified immediately of any car accident, however minor. A report form must be completed at the time of the incident and details taken as listed on the rental contract provided at the start of the rental. Additionally, the names of the Garda and County employee with whom you made the report must be retained. Dependent on the circumstances, County may require the renter to return to a County depot to complete a detailed accident report. County reserves the right not to supply a replacement vehicle.

If the rental period is increased, an additional deposit may be required. If the rental period is shortened which results in a reduction of the rental charges, the deposit amount will remain unchanged, and the difference between the original and revised deposit is forfeited (it cannot be used towards remaining rental charges). To request a change to a confirmed booking, please use the alterations request link on your confirmation. Any alterations are subject to availability and the approval of the supplier. In addition to the alteration policy of the supplier stated in their terms, the following charges will apply:

To add or remove extras to/from a confirmed booking: 10.00
Motorhome rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency):
To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 75.00

The alteration fee will not be charged if your alteration request is not possible.
Vehicle Capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
